First of all, I really like this description or definition of "remix". This definition shows that a remix is more than just changing something around. It shows that it is a way of expressing one's feelings about something by making it one's own. Before reading this chapter, I was one that thought a remix was only something in music, and I also thought that there was nothing special about a remix..."It's just changing up the original, right? They couldn't even come up with their own idea?" But after reading this chapter, and this definition in particular, I now see that a remix is a way of expressing one's thoughts and feelings. It is a form of creating a new literacy, and I now realize that creating a remix is a form of creating something, not just copying something.

(I thought this was funny because a lot of times the remix is better than the original.)
"These enabling services and applications are not packages, or artifacts, or consumables, but resources that have to be performed" (Lankshear 338)
When I was growing up, if you wanted to use a computer to create something, you had to do it on Microsoft Word or Paint. Now, there are hundreds upon hundreds of Web 2.0 applications that allow people to create or produce something. The text goes onto say that "you have the opportunity to drive them" and "what you get from them depends on how you perform them".

(I recently started writing my own blog, and I love that I am finally able to write for others to view.)
I had the first computer in my neighborhood and I spent a lot of time on Paint, Tetris, the game, "Where in the World is Carmen Santiago?" and a typing game. It is amazing what we can do with the tools and technology available and I use them often. Although, it does take some time to figure them out and, in my case, some expertise in organization to keep track of them all- I get excited about a tool then if I don't use it for awhile, I have a tendency to forget about it.
ReplyDeleteJessie, The tools that exist today exemplify the ideas remixing... apps like "Snapchat" have added graphics to enhance the now passe "selfie" to a new level... or apps like "Periscope" that invite viewers on a virtual tour while its happening (real time) and even allow questions and comments. This to me is the exciting start to a great journey in education has it really starts to transform over the next few years... and ordinary people like myself may even have a chance to share some ordinary ideas (that others can read) that never existed before this technology. I have several hits a day on a post I wrote in 2012 in an English Lit class... Not sure what those think about my thoughts and its far from "viral" but without blogging technology... the only person that would have read those words would have been the professor. Technology tools provide a great platform for ordinary people to possibly share extraordinary creations. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and comments this semester!
ReplyDeleteI also was struck by the remix information. It makes you think about how differently content is viewed compared to the olden days.
